Now that the latest season of the TV juggernaut “American Idol” is over and the contestants are moving on to future endeavors, Maricopa residents can get off the couch and take part in an singing competition all their own.

Starting Saturday, Arena Sports Grill will be hosting the Maricopa Idol competition.

“It seemed like a fun thing to do for the community,” said Arena manager Bob Essex.

Although all of the details of the event have not been ironed out, Essex said the restaurant plans on running the competition for seven weeks, with the first five weeks being used to determine the finalists.

“Every week we will pick a group of winners, and then we will call all of the winners back after five weeks of competition to determine Maricopa’s Idol,” Essex said.

Contestants are not required to sign up in advance but are encouraged to come in their most creative costumes. Each participant will have the opportunity to sing the song of their choice in front of three local Maricopa judges.

“We haven’t selected the judges yet, but we will have them in place,” Essex said.
