Nancy McTighe is the new chairperson of the Friends of the Maricopa Public Library.

McTighe moved to Maricopa in 2006 from Tulsa, Okla., where she spent 14 years as a social worker and supervisor for the department of human services, as well as another 14 years managing her husband’s law office, which specialized in social security disabilities.

An avid quilter and seamstress, McTighe was the first chairman of the local quilting guild, volunteers at the library and is a member of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Libraries advisory committee.

Her introduction to the Friends came from her neighbor, Hermina Anderson, who invited McTighe to a coffee on the porch of the library; she joined the group prior to her permanent move to Maricopa.

McTighe has organized the Friends’ bi-annual book sales and worked at their events booths.  She also crafted and sold purses, donating $15 of their $25 price tag to the Friends.

During her one-year term, McTighe hopes to expand the Friends’ active membership. “We need more members involved in decisions and activities,” she said. “I would like to see the group become more volunteer driven than board driven.”

Activities for the coming year are in the planning stages; they will be reviewed by the membership, McTighe and the board members of the Friends of the Maricopa Public Library, who include:  co-chairman Jim Crowe, secretary Carolyn Tiffany, treasurer Lynn Grant, outgoing chairperson Roberta Cianciosi, visual chairman Brenda Campbell, events chairman Stephanie Palmer, membership chairman Derinda Pelletier and volunteer chairman Judie Stewart.

The Friends of the Maricopa Public library meet the second Monday of each month at the library at 6 p.m. New members are always welcome.
