MPD receives fraudulent solicitation call report

62

On Monday the Maricopa Police Department received a report from a woman who lives in the Pinal County area near Queen Creek. She reported that sometime around Thursday, July 29, a male subject contacted her by phone and identified himself as a member of the Maricopa Police Department.

The person asked her to donate to the fallen officer’s family. The woman was asked to give a credit card or debit card number over the phone, which she did. The women authorized a $20 donation. She later found several hundreds of dollars of fraudulent activity on her account.

The Maricopa Police Department wishes to remind the public not to give your personal financial information over the phone to anyone who initiates a phone call to you. Typically, when officers are killed in the line of duty, accounts are set up at legitimate financial institutions for the public to make donations to assist the family. Other opportunities may be provided through non-profit organizations such as the 100 Club, which have been specifically established to render aid to families of fallen officers in Arizona.

If you have had any telephone contact with persons indentifying themselves as members of local law enforcement asking for donations, we encourage you to contact the police agency in your jurisdiction to report this activity. Then, take the necessary measures to protect your accounts by contacting your financial institution.

If you would like to contribute to the fund for the family of Chandler Detective Carlos Ledesma, killed in the line of duty, please make donations to:
