MPD urges drivers, pedestrians to exercise caution

On July 21, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Maricopa police officers responded to Goles Drive and Venture Road on a report of an accident with injuries, vehicle versus pedestrian.

When officers arrived on scene, the Maricopa Fire Department was giving aid to an injured 11-year-old child. The child was responsive at the time and was identified, and the child’s guardian responded to the scene.

Southwest Ambulance transported the 11-year-old child to the Maricopa County Medical Center in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. Doctors anticipated that the child would make a full recovery.

The injured child told officers he observed the vehicle traveling on Goles Drive toward Rancho El Dorado Parkway. He stated the vehicle was not going very fast, and he believed he could cross the street prior to the vehicle passing him.  Unfortunately, the juvenile misjudged the distance and was struck by the vehicle in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle said they did not see the child until he was on the hood of the vehicle.

Many vehicle accidents, like this one, happen during the hours surrounding dusk and dawn. As the light conditions change, it becomes more difficult for drivers, bike riders and pedestrians alike to judge distance and speed.

The Maricopa Police Department encourages everyone to be more mindful of things around them as they drive, especially at dusk and dawn, and to be extra cautious driving through our city’s residential neighborhoods.

In addition, parents should continually talk to their children about proper safety rules for crossing the street while riding their bikes or on foot.
