MPD will enforce Shannon’s Law

56

In the year 2000 Shannon’s law was passed in Arizona making it a felony to fire a gun into the air. (ARS 13-3107.A)

Shannon’s Law is named after Shannon Smith, a fourteen-year-old girl who was killed by a stray bullet while standing in the yard of her Phoenix home in 1999.

The Maricopa Police Department is prepared to enforce Shannon’s law and encourages residences to assist in reporting this type of unsafe behavior.

Individuals convicted under the law face up to two years in jail and a $100,000 fine.

We invite all to have an enjoyable and safe New Year’s celebration.
