Muralist Mory brings another Pacana Park wall to life

Pacana Park just keeps getting more and more colorful — and it’s not done yet.

Early this morning, Casa Grande-based artist Mauriel “Mory” Morejon finished painting a new mural on the eastern side of a restroom building near the park’s main playground. It’s the site of a former Maricopa Express Transit bus stop.

Spending nine hours on the project, Morejon used a mixture of acrylic and enamel paints. The new mural, which was designed by the city, features a surreal foreground with vibrant cactus flowers and a chromatic roadrunner. The mural was commissioned for $3,100, said Elle Ortega, a spokesperson for the city.

Morejon added a touch of his own flair and realism with copper-toned mountains in the background. The colors pop, but don’t overwhelm the eye.

This, the third mural at Pacana Park, follows Morejon’s lakeside mural under the park’s ramada and Gila monster mural at the fitness court. In an interview this morning, Morejon said he will likely paint another one on the adjacent northern wall sometime in the future.

Morejon has painted several other public art pieces in Maricopa in recent years, including a large mural on a water tower across the Union Pacific Railroad tracks near The Home Depot, a fresco on the side of the Maricopa Museum and Visitor Center and a painted horse statue near John Wayne and Alterra Parkways.

“Public art plays a vital role in creating a sense of place. Whether it’s a vibrant mural in a neighborhood park or a striking sculpture along a busy city street, these artworks become lasting symbols in our memories, tied to the spaces we treasure,” said Community Enrichment Director Quinn Konold. “They bring character and uniqueness to their surroundings, sparking creativity and inviting people to return again and again. We’re excited to continue showcasing the talent of local and regional artists, celebrating the brilliance and creativity our community has to offer.”
