Native New Yorker celebrates 5th year with free wings

On Wednesday Maricopa’s Native New Yorker will celebrate is fifth anniversary by offering six free wings to everyone who purchases a drink.

“It has been five great years, and we are looking forward to many more,” said Native New Yorker owner Pat Kieny.

In past years the local restaurant has run a 10 cent wing promotion to help celebrate its anniversary, but this year they teamed with Native New Yorkers around the state to offer the six free wings as a part of the franchise’s 31 years in the state.

The first Native New Yorker opened in the late 1970s when Judy and Floyd Anderson and their four daughters crammed into their car to embark on a cross-country move from Buffalo, N. Y., to Phoenix, Ariz.

Arriving in Arizona, the couple decided to buy a pizza place, but could not turn a profit. After countless menu revisions while teetering on the verge of financial failure, they decided to try one last menu modification, offering food invented in their home city—Buffalo wings. It was the first time a restaurant in Arizona offered the fiery items, and the rest is history.

“This promotion is like Haley’s comet; you will have to wait another 30 years to see one like it,” Kieny said.
