Nearby restaurants slapped with health violations

Raw chicken stored above cooked food, dirty equipment and placing fallen food back on a customer’s plate were just some of the violations handed out to nearby restaurants this past month.

Maricopa County routinely inspects restaurants to ensure the quality and safety of food. Health inspectors look for violations, such as storing food at improper temperatures, not washing hands or other maintenance and safety issues.

Each of these violations is assigned a point value, which is then used to determine the restaurant’s score. A gold star is the highest ranking possible and means a business scored in the top 25 percent; a silver star denotes a restaurant scoring in the middle 50 percent, and no award means a restaurant has scored in the bottom 25 percent.

If a restaurant receives no award, they are later inspected to be given the opportunity to comply with the health inspector’s complaints. Here is a look at those locations and a few of the violations that caused them to fail their inspection in May.

Arizona Grand Resort, 8000 S. Arizona Grand Pkwy. — Storing foods at improper temperatures.

Biscuits, 4623 E. Elliot Road — Physical facility is not cleaned as frequently as necessary and/or not cleaned during periods when the least amount of food is exposed.

Cactus Jacks, 4747 E. Elliot Road — Inspector observed employees are not following proper hand and arm cleaning procedures. Non-food contact surfaces are not cleaned frequently enough to preclude accumulation of soil residues.

Hooters, 4804 E. Chandler Blvd. — Inspector observed cook handle raw chicken wings then remove gloves and put on new pair of gloves and proceed to handle raw hamburger pattie; observed waitress place French fries back on the plate barehanded when French fries fell off plate.

Rock Bottom Restaurant, 14205 S. 50th St. — Inspector observed cook place lettuce on hamburger for customer service barehanded and without gloves; observed raw beef patties being stored directly on top of cooked enchiladas in reach of prep table in front of grill; observed raw chicken being stored on shelf above cooked beans in front of fryer.

Beijing Beijing, 1327 E. Chandler Blvd. — Inspector observed multiple bags of cooked pot stickers and cooked pasta tightly wrapped in plastic bags stacked more than 4 inches high; observed bowl of raw chicken being stored directly on top of raw beef in reach in upright refrigerator.
