New look launched for ADOT’s 5-1-1 Web site

Just in time for the winter driving season, the Arizona Department of Transportation is providing 5-1-1 Web site users with a new and improved way to track the latest in roadway conditions across Arizona. Users will notice a new look for the highway conditions reporting system, which now provides the public with more options and streamlined tools to quickly find what they are looking for.

The new look includes simple color-coded and geometric-shaped icons that are now grouped into four major categories. These icons provide users with more information about a particular incident once you hover and click on it. The map is also more interactive; users can view various quadrants of the state or different sections of the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas to get the latest in roadway conditions.

Other new features include the addition of a “Help” file at the top of the page and the option to view the information in Spanish. All of the new changes to the 5-1-1 Web site are the result of public input. Community members were surveyed about their experiences using the site, and their opinions provided the framework for a more efficient system.

The most popular features of the map remain. Users are still able to access real-time information from ADOT’s Traffic Operations Center. The images from ADOT’s 200 statewide cameras also provide real-time images. Some of these camera images can be found on the Road Weather Information Systems icons, which allow users to view road conditions in parts of the state that get winter weather.

Over the last few days, visitors have flocked to ADOT’s 5-1-1 Web site (www.az511.gov) and its camera features. The site typically receives about one million hits per day. During this year’s winter storms, 5-1-1 is averaging about double that amount per day as viewers seek the latest traffic conditions in Arizona’s high country.
