Old library closing to prepare for move to new site

Remember the last time you moved? It seemed there was endless sorting and packing, and everything had to be cleaned before you locked the door for the final time.

On Saturday, April 18, the present library will close its doors so the sorting and boxing of the current collection can begin prior to the move to the new library in May. Staff members will also be cleaning the books and audio-visual materials before transporting them to the new site.

Patrons who have books that have been checked out and are due for return after April 18 may return them on schedule using the exterior drop box at the old library. Books that are not returned until after the due date will still incur late fees.

The new 8,085-square foot Maricopa Public Library will be located at Desert Green Drive and Smith-Enke Road (41600 West Smith-Enke Road). It is expected to be open at the end of May with a collection of approximately 32,000 items.

The new library’s entry foyer will house the circulation desk and a centrally located self-check area. There will be two small study group rooms and a meeting room for groups up to 30, as well as 20 computers with Internet access. Periodicals can be read and enjoyed in the lounge area.

Children up to age 5, tweens and teens will all have their own designated areas as part of the 1,700 square feet dedicated to a children’s library.

Library staff will have a workroom, break room and restroom, and public restrooms will also be available.

The Maricopa Friends of the Library will have space to display their collection of historical items and photos from early Maricopa (see related story).

“The new library will be a dynamic facility that will energize the community and that will celebrate the history of Maricopa,” said Community Services Director Marty McDonald earlier.

The old library building is slated to become a teen center with a pool table and big screen television set.
