Orbitel launches community station Copa 6

Orbitel Communications recently launched a new community television station, Copa 6, on its cable network. The station’s look and production has been changed to meet the needs of the community and provide a greater chance to attain Orbitel’s goal for Maricopans to “get connected.”

The station, channel six to Orbitel customers, will feature information about upcoming community events, nonprofit organizations and churches, as well as Orbitel’s features. Orbitel plans to focus heavily on promoting the city of Maricopa, the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce and the Maricopa Unified School District.

“Local origination of channels are making cable TV service unique to the character of its community,” Keith Kirkman, Orbitel CEO and president, said. “This is something you cannot ever get from a large national satellite provider that gives its viewers no choice or voice in what is shown.”

The station begins it new look by featuring pictures of Maricopa’s largest Salsa Festival and honoring the graduating seniors of Maricopa High School by showing their individual photos.

“Giving our youth strong roots allows them to go out into the world with confidence,” Copa 6 producer Cindy Dunn said. “By honoring the graduating Class of 2009, we hope to send the message that we as a community are proud of them and expect great things from tomorrow’s leaders.”

Copa 6 will continue to be a place to celebrate community. Local current events and calendar items will play a big role in programming.

“This station has unlimited potential. We have made a commitment to Maricopa, and if it is within our ability to provide better communication through a local station, even if it costs us money, then that’s exactly what we intend to do,” Kirkman said. “If our technology can help strengthen the community, then we all win.”

Copa 6 is a designated community station. Groups wanting to have their information displayed are welcome to submit their requests to the station. Airtime cannot be purchased on this station, but commercial space is available for purchase on 24 other Orbitel network stations.
