Orbitel Communications is sponsoring $1,000 in scholarships for Maricopa High School seniors at awards night on May 13.

The two Orbitel scholarships in the amount of $500 each will recognize the student’s achievements in leadership, community service, and academics.

“As a local corporation, it is important to take a portion of our customers’ dollars and invest in the community,” said Keith Kirkman, CEO and President of Orbitel Communications. “These scholarships will help fulfill the dreams of young adults and help advance our community.”

High school counselors have emailed applications to seniors, and applications are available at the high school office. Applications are due by April 30, 2010, and applicants must be a senior attending Maricopa High School, a U.S. citizen, have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA, have current or past involvement in extracurricular activities, demonstrated leadership, and/or voluntary community service, and be accepted and enrolled in an accredited junior college, college, or university.

“Sponsoring this scholarship is part of a larger plan that began last year,” Kirkman said. “Cindy Dunn in Orbitel public relations has worked diligently to build and enhance our relationships with the City of Maricopa, the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce, Maricopa Unified Schools, F.O.R., Little League, as well as many other not-for-profit organizations.”

Orbitel has helped sponsor The F.O.R. Grape Escape, Founders’ Day, Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner, the Against Abuse Gala, Flicks for Food, MUSD Override Committee, Little League Opening Day, Pinal County 4-H Fair and the Salsa Festival.

“Supporting our community is exactly what local businesses need to do; no matter how large or small, it is the action that makes a difference,” Cindy Dunn said. “In tough economic times it would easy to place all giving on hold, but it is now that we need each other the most. I am happy to represent a corporation that can see beyond today. We will all be stronger in the end.”
