On Friday at approximately 8 a.m. Mark Vernick, 32, of Casa Grande, was killed when a Chevrolet pick-up, driven by Alejandro Statler, 19, also of Casa Grande, collided with his motorcycle.

Investigators report that Vernick, a Southwest Ambulance paramedic, was traveling northbound on Overfield Road just north of Randolph Road when a Chevrolet pick-up, driven by Statler, crossed the center line into Vernick’s lane of travel, colliding with the motorcyclist head on. Vernick died at the scene. Statler and a passenger sustained minor injuries; both refused medical treatment.

Drug and/or alcohol involvement have not been ruled out at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Mike Vernick during this very tragic time,” said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.

Several vigils have been held, and a memorial has been erected at the scene of the collision. The sheriff’s office reminds travelers to be mindful of mourners and pay extra attention when traveling in the area.
