People convicted of domestic violence charges can face a maximum of six months in jail.

Courts currently charge domestic violence as a misdemeanor, which carries the same jailtime as petty theft, simple assault, disorderly conduct and false reporting an emergency.

InMaricopa asked our readers if they believe the punishment for domestic violence fits the crime.

Three out of 4 readers said domestic violence should be a felony.

One in 5 readers said the current statute offers a fair punishment.

The remaining readers, 7%, said punishments for domestic violence are too strict.
