Deportivo Saprissa fans may spread to Maricopa with the announcement of a soccer exhibition.

A professional Central American sports club will visit Maricopa this spring, and the details are expected to be announced during tonight’s Maricopa City Council meeting.

Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica will send a soccer team to play in exhibition at Maricopa High School’s Ram Stadium and host community events.

The city council has a short regular agenda but a lengthy list of consent items and three proclamations. The Saprissa announcement comes early in the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

On the regular agenda, the council may choose an applicant to fill a vacancy on the Merit Board. Those applying are David Carlson and Christopher Shoemaker. The council will also discuss an amendment to a professional services agreement with Piper Jaffray for financial services.

Among items on the consent agenda are a presiding judge agreement with Lyle Riggs, a final plat for the Cortona subdivision, communication lines and microwave link for the Copper Sky Police Substation, the purchase of a fogger for the parks and an application for a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant for two more firefighters.

Proclamations include Week of the Child, Start by Believing Day and Volunteer Recognition.

Prior to the regular session, the Maricopa City Council will meet in a work session at 6 p.m.

Up for discussion are a new city seal, service and operating trends at the library and a text amendment to the subdivision ordinance.
