Public Safety providing services in Maricopa’s annexation area

Earlier this month the Maricopa Fire Department responded to two incidents within the City of Maricopa’s pending annexation area, legally known as Annexation 07-01.

The first incident occurred near Hidden Valley and Bowlin Roads at approximately 9:43 a.m. on Aug. 7. Maricopa firefighters extinguished a debris fire at an outside storage area. Ak-Chin Fire Department also responded. The incident was handled in under two hours.

The second incident occurred near Hidden Valley Road and McDavid Road later that evening. Maricopa Fire Department personnel extinguished a mobile home fire. Maricopa was on scene less than seven minutes after the original 9-1-1 call. The Goodyear and Ak-Chin Fire Departments provided mutual aid.

No persons were harmed in either incident.

“The City of Maricopa is pleased to have provided services to the residents in the greater Maricopa community,” stated Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith. “Public safety is a priority, and I commend the work of our firefighters as well as the other responding units.”

Annexation 07-01 was challenged and is currently under litigation with the courts. Until such time as the challenge is resolved, the Maricopa Fire Department will continue to be a mutual aid provider of fire services for the area.

Public Safety is of the utmost importance to the City of Maricopa, and it is hoped the challenge will be resolved quickly so residents may benefit from the protections of municipal services the city is able to provide. Preliminary plans are already in place for providing public safety services to the annexation area, and, if the annexation is successful, the Fire Department as well as the Police Department will incorporate the annexed area into deployment analyses for determining new stations or staffing.
