Hopes for an iconic Tucson diner are still within reach — it’s something that may excite sub sandwich and frozen drink lovers in Maricopa.

eegee’s gave Maricopa the Irish goodbye in July, saying it nixed long-standing plans to expand here. But suddenly, the company wants back into the party.

A social media comment on a post by eegee’s official channels Friday showed nearly two months after pulling plans to come to Maricopa, the company may be rethinking its options.

One InMaricopa reader commented on an eegee’s Instagram post Thursday.

“Ya’ll quietly backed out of opening in Maricopa,” commented Kara Parkhurst. “We were all so pumped.”

The diner responded directly to the comment: “On hold, but we’ll pick it up again.”

The post comes the same day the quintessentially Arizonan lunchery announced it will shutter three of its Tucson locations.

“We indentified these restaurants because of their proximity to other locations,” Tucson-based eegee’s said in a statement. “The closures will allow us to invest more into our nearby stores and strengthen our ability to bring eegee’s to more communities.”

Neither eegee’s nor the city immediately responded to requests for comment.
