Seniors gather to share information, socialize

Maricopa does not have a senior center. Province has its own community center, but other subdivisions do not have a gathering place for seniors, who are generally in the 55 or better age range.

Beginning this Thursday, Maricopa seniors can meet to discuss and research information on topics of interest, followed by a socializing time with coffee, games and cards. The group is also bringing in magazines, puzzles and books to share with one another.

“With a population of 38,000, we felt that there could be a number of seniors in the area who would like to participate in a social context,” said Carol Grandfield, one of the event organizers.

According to Grandfield, the long-term goal is to have a facility just for senior activities, but, in the interim, the short-term goal is “to get seniors together wherever we can meet in Maricopa.”

While the group is looking for a permanent meeting place, Anytime Fitness has volunteered their classroom for the gatherings, held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

Various senior centers as well as the Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens have been contacted for ideas and information. At the last meeting a Medicare website, which compares various health plans, was shared. On Jan. 8 those in attendance will receive resource guides and contact information for senior services available in Pinal County.

All seniors are welcome to attend the gatherings. “We welcome new ideas and information at the meetings,” said Grandfield.
