Sisterhood of Traveling Quilts presents quilts to shelter

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilts presented its most recent labor of love of 105 handmade quilts to Against Abuse Oct. 22.

“The 105 quilts were completed by our small group of 32 ladies during our August Charity Challenge where each member is encouraged to make two quilts for donation – but it appears that some ladies just couldn’t stop at making just two,” said blanket coordinator Brenda Campbell. “This brings our total of available quilts just over 250.”

Against Abuse Board of Director Torri Anderson accepted the donation and provided an update on the building project. And although she could not provide an exact number of children who would be in the shelter each week, she said about 30 children were in the Casa Grande center this month.

In addition to committing to providing a comfort quilt – a quilt made for an individual in need of warmth or comfort of some type – to each child who enters the Maricopa shelter once it’s completed, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilts also has adopted a room at the Maricopa domestic shelter. Member will be responsible for painting the room, providing bedding, window coverings and other room furnishings. Quilts for each of the six twin bunks (and matching replacement quilts) were completed by the group last year.
