Saturday’s smoke-detector walk makes impact

Volunteers from the newly formed city of Maricopa Community Emergency Response Team and Boys Scouts of America partnered with the Maricopa Fire Department and the Arizona Burn Foundation for the city’s first smoke detector walk Saturday.

The walk, which took place in Maricopa’s Heritage District, provided smoke detectors for homes that previously were unprotected, had smoke detectors passed their expiration date, or were not equipped with the most up-to-date technology.

Approximately 20 volunteers installed dual-function smoke detectors donated by the Arizona Burn Foundation. Thirty-eight new detectors were installed.

Volunteers met at Fire Station 575 for a safety briefing and instruction on how to inspect and install new detectors. The event took 9 a.m. to noon and included crews from the Maricopa fire and police departments in the area providing support as necessary.
