A teenager was shot on Wednesday night at the Copper Sky Recreation Complex outdoor basketball courts, according to Maricopa police.

The teenager was transported to a local hospital for his injuries, which police believe to be non-life threatening.

MPD has determined the shooting followed an argument, it said. It is unknown if the victim and shooter knew each other.

Detectives believe this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public. Consequently, normal operations have resumed at Copper Sky and no facilities are being impacted by the ongoing investigation.

“Officers are aware there was another conflict earlier in the day and have not ruled out a connection,” said Monica Williams, MPD public-information officer.

At about 10 p.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired at Copper Sky. They found the teenage male at a court with a gunshot to a leg.

At 11 p.m., six police vehicles were still at the courts, as officers continued interviewing people.

Maricopa police have not yet made any arrests, and said the investigation is ongoing.
