Third candidate takes steps to enter the mayoral race

A third Maricopan has declared his intent to enter the mayoral race, the second since Wednesday to request and pick up a packet to become an official write-in candidate.

Michael Godsey of Tortosa said he’s been interested for quite some time in the issues every other resident cares about from transportation to economic growth, and that he often discusses such matters with neighbors.

He and his family moved to Maricopa a year and a half ago from Chandler where they rented briefly after relocating from North Carolina. Since then, he’s been active with the local Boy Scouts of America, including pulling a shift selling hot dogs and sausages with them and his son at Pacana Park on Founders Day.

When he saw a news story on inmaricopa.com this week announcing the write-in candidacy of Jim Hull of Rancho El Dorado, he decided it was time for him to get involved politically, too (see ‘Write-in candidate set to run for mayor’).

“I think it’s great he felt Maricopa deserved more options and I share that opinion,” Godsey said.

Like Hull, Godsey said he is depending on a Web site to get his message out to voters who will have to remember his name well enough to write it in on the ballot in May. He’s already registered the domain name at www.GodseyForMayor.com.

He doesn’t have a campaign budget, and unless donations come in, Godsey said he will spread the word the old fashioned way by continuing to talk to neighbors and friends.

“I think it will spread like wildfire,” he said late Friday. “The Web site should be up and running tomorrow.”

Godsey said he expected to pick up and complete the required packet and file it with the city by Monday.

More detailed coverage on each of the candidate’s stances on local issues will follow.
