Thrift store owner looks to aid victims of abuse

Maricopa resident Christina Zolyniak is one step closer to her goal of helping victims of domestic violence with the opening of her thrift store last week.

Nifty Thrifty Restyle and Décor, located on John Wayne Parkway south of the railroad tracks, offers a wide variety of items.

“We sell everything but paint,” Zolyniak said.

Zolyniak, a victim of domestic violence for nearly 12 years, moved to Maricopa about three years ago to escape a violent situation at home and provide a better life for her children.

“It’s been a hard road to get to this point, but with the help of my parents, I have finally gotten it off the ground,” Zolyniak said.

She is in the process of filing the necessary paperwork to become a non-profit organization and once she receives that distinction, she will begin to use the store’s proceeds to help victims of abuse.

“If a person were to come into my store today needing a shirt or something, I would give it to them,” she said. “I know how it is to struggle; we went from having everything in the world to having almost nothing.”

However until she gets the non-profit designation, she is working to pay back the initial investment she secured to start up the business.

In addition to the standard thrift store fare, Zolyniak has a person come into the store once a week who buys gold and silver.

“In these tough times, services like this are needed,” she said.
