The American flag now flies proudly over Pacana Park.

Boy Scout Troop 993 raised the flag for the first time on Thursday, Oct. 9, completing a project that began in August 2007.

The flagpole and the plaque at its base, which lists the project’s donors, ran about $10,000; however, community and business support plus donations reduced the cost to $2,500.

Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith told Troop 993, “This flag will wave proudly for the next few days, for years and even for generations to come. You should be very proud of yourselves and your accomplishment.”

Smith added that when the proposal came before city council, he was amazed at the scope of the project.

Various community leaders, parents, Cub Scouts, Councilwoman Marquisha Griffin and Supervisor David Snider were present as the flag was raised for the first time.

City Community Services Director Marty McDonald was made an honorary member of Troop 993 for his support and encouragement during the flagpole project.
