The Maricopa City Council accepted the resignation of one of its own, Steve Baker, Tuesday, and decided to invite the public to apply for the position. The replacement will be appointed by the City Council and serve the remainder of Baker’s term, through May 2008.

So far, two residents have taken the Council up on its offer.

Gerard Hahn, a manager for a New York-based power plant equipment provider, is one. Hahn moved to Maricopa in 2006 and is an active volunteer for area youth programs, including the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.

“I would like to impart some different opinions and viewpoints on topics that are not from someone who has personal or professional ties to the community and Council, rather a dedication to the community,” Hahn wrote in his application.

Hahn also stated, “I have no political experience, which makes me a true voice of the community.”

Dallas Paulsen applied for the job too. Paulsen moved to Maricopa four years ago and has served as president of the Rancho El Dorado Homeowners Association and the city’s Task Force Committee. He currently serves on the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan Committee.

Paulsen, a regular attendee at Council meetings, highlighted his 42 years of experience in the construction industry and extensive work with governmental agencies in his application.

“I would like to be involved, even if for a short period of time,” he wrote, “helping to form the future progress of the city serving the community of Maricopa.”

Residents have until Dec. 17 to submit an application form with a cover letter and resume for consideration. The current City Council members are expected to conduct short interviews and appoint Baker’s replacement at their Dec. 18 meeting.
