Veterans to host flag retirement ceremony Saturday

Sometimes an American flag becomes tattered or torn, and that’s when it needs to be retired in a dignified manner.

The U.S. Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

On Saturday, Dec. 11, local veterans groups, in conjunction with the Maricopa Police and Fire Departments and a unit of the Boy Scouts, will conduct a Community Flag Retirement Ceremony, accompanied by the MPD Color Guard and Maricopa Fire’s Pipe and Drum Brigade.

The 3:30 p.m. ceremony at the Maricopa Veterans Center, 44240 W. Maricopa – Casa Grande Hwy., will be a respectful American flag burning ceremony, following appropriate, traditional protocol.

Members of Maricopa’s VFW Post 12043, American Legion Post 133 and the American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary Unit 133 encourage citizens to bring any of their American flags that, due to excessive wear or damage, should be respectfully retired.

“The Maricopa Veterans Center sincerely invites all residents of Maricopa and the surrounding areas to attend and share this patriotic community event with us,” said American Legion Post 133 Commander Jack McClain.
