VFW Maricopa Post 12043 is fundraising from now until Labor Day to support local veterans and their families.

The group also sponsors such school programs as Voice of Democracy and Partiots Pen audio – essay scholarship programs – local Boy Scouts, police, firefighters, paramedics and teachers.

Members of Post 12043 are joining with Raceway Bar & Grill Sept. 3 to raffle a .45 Henry Rifle and offering food specials including stadium brats, sloppy Joes or pulled-pork sandwiches. Veterans will get free brownies.

Jeanna DelCotto, Raceway owner, said she and her husband Rand have hosted VFW fundraising events before and the turnout is always good.

“We’ve built a great relationship with the Maricopa VFW group,” DelCotto said. “We’re excited about being able to show our support and appreciation for our veterans.”

The event will culminate in a drawing for the rifle, presided over by Post Commander Don Rostron.

Items raffled off at VFW fundraisers are voted on by post members and good firearms have proven successful in the past.

“It has been proven over the past few years that a good quality weapon has been our ticket to successful fundraising,” said Bud Ryan, former post commander.

The winner must pass a federal background check to claim the rifle. However, if a check is unsuccessful, the winner will receive cash in the amount the VFW spent for the rifle.
