Vietnam vets to be honored at commemoration

Maricopa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12043 is inviting all Vietnam veterans to participate in a special event Jan. 27.

The general public, too, is welcome at the 8 a.m. Flag-Raising Tribute to Vietnam Veterans.

Post Commander Mike Kemery said it will be a combined event acknowledging the Vietnam Peace Accord, which was signed Jan. 27, 1973, and the continuing 50th anniversary commemoration of the war.

Those attending will pay tribute to the two Maricopans and two residents of Stanfield killed in the war.

The VFW will also rededicate the monument in front of the post.

Kemery estimated 50 percent of the post’s membership is of the Vietnam era. But all Vietnam veterans, members or not, are asked to turn out to be honored.
