Occupants survive Mother’s Day car fire, follows Saturday crash nearby

Just after the sun set on Mother’s Day, a car caught fire on Smith-Enke Road at Vintage Drive.

Yesterday around 7 p.m., a Hyundai Tucson broke down and began smoking. By 7:15 p.m., it had erupted in flames.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., the Maricopa Fire and Medical Department responded to the scene and found the SUV with fire in the engine compartment. Everyone made it out of the car safely, according to fire officials.

“All passengers were out of the vehicle and were moved to a safe location,” said MFMD spokesperson Monica Williams.

The intersection is frequently the site of pedestrian, scooter and cyclist crashes, rollovers, T-bones, pileups, motorcycle accidents and other emergencies.

“MPD was already on scene controlling traffic. Crews attacked and extinguished the fire,” said Williams.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Smith-Enke Road was also blocked off just east of Porter Road around 1 p.m. yesterday following a rear-end collision with minor injuries reported.

Rancho Mirage resident Taylor Balli said another car “pulled out completely in front of us.” She said she tried to stop, but the other driver didn’t give her enough time. She said she was “definitely banged up” and the car was totaled.

“I heard it happen right in my backyard,” added Maricopa Dashcam’s Aaron Keel.
