More than 500 proud parents turned out to Saddleback Elementary School on Wednesday to watch Pima Butte Elementary win the Maricopa Unified School District’s fourth- and fifth-grade academic league championship finals.
“It was a great victory for our students,” said Pima Butte principal Matt Montoya.
The academic challenge, now in its third year in the district, is a yearlong competition between the elementary schools. The students in the competition are quizzed on concepts that are appropriate for their respective grade level, but taken to a higher level of comprehension.
“It is a great motivator for the students,” said Matthew Metcalf, league organizer.
“The event was a huge success and we are proud of all our children who took part,” said district Superintendent John Flores.
