The Maricopa Rams boys’ varsity basketball team capped off a dominant tournament performance with a 47-44 win against Skyline in the championship game for the Copa Hoops tournament.

The team trailed 26-20 at the end of the first half, but was able to turn up their defensive energy after the break and hold Skyline to only 18 points.

“It was an amazing performance against a great team,” said boys’ assistant coach Rick Abel.

With the win the team took home the trophy and will get some much needed rest after playing six games in two days.

The team will not take the floor again until a Jan. 9 match up at Santa Cruz Valley.

While the boys were able to take the number one spot on their side of the tournament, the girls were not so lucky in their bracket.

The team made it all the way to the championship match but came up short, falling victim to a 35-66 blow out loss against Salt River.

It was the girls’ first loss in the two-day tournament and dropped them to a second place finish.

The girls’ next game is scheduled for Jan. 6 at Safford.
