MUSD’s free breakfast and lunch program begins in June

The Maricopa Unified School District will sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children for the month of June.

Meals will be provided to all children, ages 18 and under, without charge. Food service is the same for all children, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Meals will be provided at these sites during the following times:

Maricopa Elementary:  Lunch only from 11: 30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Santa Cruz Elementary:  Breakfast 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.; Lunch 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Butterfield Elementary:  Breakfast 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.; Lunch 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Maricopa Wells Middle School:  Breakfast 7:30 a.m. – 8:30; Lunch 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Kids who relied on school breakfast and lunch programs won’t be eating there. One fact is clear:  hunger never takes a vacation. That’s the name of this new program, recently approved by the MUSD governing board, to ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.

“I am excited,” said Suzette Moe, district child nutrition director, when the program was approved. “It will be a program that really benefits our community.”

Federal reimbursements will cover labor and food costs for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

“This is a great thing,” Moe told the governing board. “We know children need to eat during the summer, and we look forward to serving the children this June.”
