A 19-year-old man who was struck by a vehicle while walking in a Homestead neighborhood in May has died of his injuries.

David Hill Jr., who was blind, was struck by a car the morning of May 15 while crossing Homestead Drive near the Porter Road access. The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene as first responders arrived, and Hill was transported to a trauma unit.

Pastor Grady Root of Maricopa Springs Family Church has been a chaplain with the Maricopa Police Department two years and was called the day of the accident to comfort David’s devastated mother, Keisha Owens, while she waited in the hospital. He announced on his Facebook page that David passed away July 22.

On behalf of the family, friends are asking for help to transport David back to Chicago for a memorial service.

Hill suffered trauma to his brain and spine and broken bones. He underwent several surgeries while in a coma. He remained in a coma until he died.

Marilyn Williams of Gilbert started a GoFundMe account to help Owens take her son along with close family and friends to Illinois.

“She is a single parent and needs your help,” Williams wrote. “All proceeds will be applied to cost associated with getting David to his hometown so he can have the homegoing services he rightfully deserves.”

Root said he would be grateful for anyone who could help the family.
