Maricopans attending Stagecoach Days this year can do more than just ride on carnival attractions. They can also lace up their sneakers for a good cause.

The Stop the Violence 5K Fun Run and 1-mile Walk, the annual fundraiser for Against Abuse, Inc., will be Saturday at Pacana Park as part of Stagecoach Days.

Against Abuse, Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence.

Participating walkers and runners don’t have to cross the finish line alone.

“This year, what’s fun about it is we’re letting teams enter,” Torri Anderson, Against Abuse, Inc. board member said. “So whole businesses or schools or families can go out there and have some fun.”

All proceeds will benefit a local women and children’s shelter the group is building.

The shelter is scheduled to open early next year.

Although the event is noncompetitive, entrants who put in extra effort will be recognized.

The top male and female runners in each age bracket will be awarded medals, as will the team with the most creative team uniform and the largest team.

“We’re trying to make it something fun for the community,” Anderson said.

The entry fee for individuals is $20 until Friday and $25 on race day.

Teams or families can enter for $10a person until Friday and $20 on race day. Children younger than 10 are free with an adult. All entrants will receive a T-shirt. Anderson said more than 150 people have registered.

On race day, registration is at 7 a.m. and the 5K run starts at 8 a.m. The 1-mile walk begins at 8:15 a.m.

Packets are available for pickup at Anytime Fitness, 20924 N. John Wayne Parkway. Entrants can also register online at www.racetimers.com.
