Ak-Chin begins Veterans Day celebrations

The Ak-Chin Indian Community’s 15th annual Veteran’s Recognition Day Celebration Saturday is the first of several local Veterans Day events.

The Ak-Chin celebrations includes three sports tournaments this year.

At 9 a.m., a fun run and walk starts at the Ak-Chin Service Center to Milton “Paul” Antone Memorial Park. Signups begin at 8:30 a.m. The first 150 to register receive free T-shirts.

Other events include horseshoes and volleyball.

In horseshoes, first-, second- and third-place trophies will be awarded. Those interested should contact Anthony Narcia at 520-252-0738 or Terry Enos at 520-840-9297. There is a $20 entry fee per team.

In volleyball, co-ed volleyball teams can play for a $75 entry fee, with trophies for first through third place. Contact Raychel Peters at 520-568-1380 or Cecil Peters at 520-560-7814 for more information.

The festivities will include speakers, free barbeque and entertainment are open to the public.

Other Maricopa Veterans Day events include:

• 4 p.m. Monday – Central Arizona College’s ceremony honoring veterans at its Maricopa campus will include Maricopa High School JROTC and Councilmember Julia Gusse.
• 8 a.m. Tuesday – Flag-raising ceremony at Maricopa Veterans Center, 44240 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.
• 8:30 a.m. Tuesday – Legacy Traditional School community-wide pancake breakfast to honor veterans, 17760 Regent Drive.
• 11 a.m. Tuesday – Tortosa Homeowners Association’s second annual Appreciation Luncheon at Tortosa Main Park.
