Smith: Why I am running for county Supervisor

I sincerely appreciate the opportunity you gave me to be your mayor during one of the most challenging, yet rewarding times in our short history.

When I took office in 2008 our community was facing a harsh recession. Fast-forward to 2012; our community has not only survived, but, in several aspects, it is thriving.

Due to shrinking revenue city hall learned to do more with less. Once called the “poster child” of the housing collapse, Maricopa’s housing market is not only recovering, but it is also now one of the healthiest in the metro-Phoenix area.

Business is good in Maricopa. New businesses are moving in, and we have gone vertical with new projects in healthcare, education and entertainment. I am very happy to have delivered a financially healthy city to the next city council.

To build upon these successes, I am running as a Republican candidate for Pinal County Supervisor in the 2012 elections. I will apply the experience I gained as the mayor of the city of Maricopa to all of Pinal County. As the nation’s second fastest growing county, Pinal County will continue to grow. In fact, by 2050 Pinal County is predicted to have more jobs than Pima County, which includes Tucson.

To realize our potential we need leaders who understand growth and understand the limitations that sometimes accompany growth. Having a solid transportation and infrastructure system is one of the keys to smart growth.
