The last thing you’d expect to see while getting a haircut is your parked truck careening into a storefront next door. But that’s exactly what happened to one man in Maricopa this morning.

Around 10:30 a.m., the driver of a red Buick sedan was cruising through a shopping plaza at the corner of John Wayne Parkway and Smith Enke Road when he rammed a parked Honda Ridgeline truck and pushed it into the front of a Batteries Plus store.

“There was an older gentleman in a red car that was driving right behind Taco Bell and he hit the gas instead of the brakes,” eyewitness Brenden Poirer said.

Both vehicles sustained serious damage and were towed away. The battery shop suffered minor damage.

“It does not appear the building sustained any structural damage but the windows were shattered,” Maricopa Police Department spokesperson Monica Williams said.

According to Williams, the elderly driver suffered a medical episode at the time of the crash and was sent to the hospital. No one was injured in the amplifying collision, she said.

“Luckily, no one was walking on the sidewalk when it happened,” eyewitness Linda Chapman said.

The owner of the pickup truck was next door getting a haircut when he saw his vehicle crash into the battery shop.

Police, fire and medical units quickly arrived at the scene of the crash.

“Maricopa Police Department is coordinating with the property managers to ensure the area is secure,” Williams said.
