Sonoran Creek Marketplace is filling up, and as a result, Maricopa is getting a major new retailer.
Marshalls is in construction on a nearly 22,000-square-foot store in Sonoran Creek, next door to Sprout’s Farmers Market. Maricopa’s Chief Economic Development Officer Nathan Steele said the addition of a major retailer is a boon for the city.
“The citizens of Maricopa have a lot to be excited about with all the new retail options coming into the city,” Steele said. “At Sonoran Creek, Marshall’s is on its way! Having another option for clothing will be great for the city.”
Steele said the city will benefit in more ways than just another shopping option.
“Currently, Maricopa experiences $25.9 million a year in “leakage” in just clothing and accessories — that means Maricopans spend $25.9 million on clothing outside of Maricopa. Bringing in more and more options, such as Marshalls, will strengthen the Maricopa economy and keep those dollars here.”
According to Andrew Call, vice president of development management for the Southwest Region of Thompson Thrift, Marshalls is aiming for an opening date late this year.
“We are very excited to bring Marshalls to Sonoran Creek and Maricopa in late 2022,” Call said. “We’ve worked hard with the city, Marshalls, and our Sonoran Creek partners to bring it to fruition. The synergy that builds around businesses such as Sprouts and Marshalls is indicative of the future for Maricopa. Marshalls will bring more business to this area and to the greater area of Maricopa.”
Call said Marshalls is expected to bring a comparable number of jobs as Sprouts did when it opened in August, and “contribute to the total of 282 jobs once the full Sonoran Creek is built out.”
Marshall’s is a division of the TJX Companies, Inc., the leading off-price apparel and home fashions retailer in the U.S. and worldwide. TJX was ranked number 97 in the 2021 Fortune 500 company listings and has more than 4,500 stores in nine countries. The Maricopa store will be Marshalls’ 16th Arizona location.
