A one-vehicle crash late Tuesday night near a fast-food restaurant on North John Wayne Parkway was the culmination of a DPS trooper pursuit that began 2 miles north on southbound State Route 347 after officers observed errant behavior by the driver, a Department of Public Safety spokesman said.
At 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, DPS troopers attempted to stop the car driven by Emmanuel Mejia-Martinez of Mesa after observing reckless driving and failing to maintain its lane. At that point, the driver drove away at speeds over 100 mph, the DPS official said.
The BMW continued south on North John Wayne Parkway until it hit a landscaping boulder near West Edison Road, coming to a stop off the roadway in landscaping near a fast-food restaurant, police said.
Mejia-Martinez, 22, was arrested and booked into Pinal County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, unlawful flight from law enforcement, resisting arrest, violation of a protection order and criminal damage, a DPS official stated.
