Box Canyon, southwest of Maricopa, is a popular recreational area that creates a need for litter removal.

Rion Radford is a Life Scout and the Leave No Trace trainer in the Boy Scouts of America’s Troop 933 based in Maricopa. Scouts are required to lead a service project to earn the Eagle Scout rank.

For Rion’s Eagle project, he is inviting Maricopans to help his troop, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the National Rifle Association and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics in a clean-up project.

The clean-up will be 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in Box Canyon.

Those who would like to participate can travel to the clean-up site by driving from the intersection of State Route 238 and State Route 347 in Maricopa, west along State Route 238 to Rio Bravo Road. From there drive south on Rio Bravo Road (that turns into Hidden Valley Road) approximately 4.5 miles.

The clean-up site will be on the west side of the road just south of the intersection of Hidden Valley Road and Farrell Road.

Participants are encouraged to apply sun block and wear hats and gloves for skin protection. There is no cost for clean-up volunteers to participate.

Trash bags will be supplied by the BLM. Lunch and water will be provided to all the volunteers as a thank you from the National Rifle Association, Safari Club International and National Shooting Sports Foundation.
