Next Saturday’s movie in the park: ‘Karate Kid’

Maricopa families came out to Pacana Park Saturday night to watch the season’s first movie in the park, hosted by the city of Maricopa. With air couches, lawn chairs and blankets, people sprawled on the grass to watch “Toy Story 3.”

Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church ran the concession stand, which opened at 7 p.m.–without movie theater prices. Families also packed their own treats.

“Yes, very cool; we can bring our own stuff and don’t have to pay $40 for some popcorn and soda,” said Tristine Schmidt. She came with her neighbors and her husband, Eric, along with their two-year-old daughter, Charlee. Charlee is a big Toy Story fan. Currently working on her Buzz Light Year impression, she already does a good Rexy, with a powerful, “Aaargh!” However, out of all the characters, Jessie is her favorite.

“It’s our first time,” said Schmidt. “I had heard about this in the past and wondered how they would be, but I think this is a good idea, and I would say to anyone who plans to come, bring the mosquito repellent, just in case.”

Her husband, Eric, envious of those with an air couch, added, “I just want to say I’m glad it’s in town, and there’s something to do. It feels like we hardly get these opportunities, but I hope there’s more.”

The city will host three more Movies in the Park; the feature begins at dusk.
