City seeking input on changing sign code

Maricopa’s Planning Division is looking for community input on updating the city code regarding signage.

The division is meeting with various groups over the next two months and has scheduled an open public forum at 6 p.m. April 29 at the Global Water Center.

Sign permits have been a sticking point with some businesses in the past. Recently, the Maricopa Business Barn, after a three-year battle, was granted approval for business signs on either side of the building (see related story).

In a statement, the city’s Planning Division said it hopes the proposed changes can ensure the sign code “remains relevant, consistent, clear and reasonable.”

Among the suggested changes to the code include entries on temporary signage; sign walkers, who are often used to direct traffic to housing communities; and definitions of where signs can be placed at entry points off roadways to ensure they’re not impeding drivers’ vision.
