A 33-year-old man faces felony charges after crashing into a Province lake last week with his young daughter in the car.

Maricopa police identified the driver only as Adam and charged him with aggravated DUI and child endangerment, according to a probable cause statement.

Officers noted Adam had a “strong odor of intoxicating liquors,” as well as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. A preliminary breathalyzer test showed he was twice the legal limit, according to police documents.

Earlier this year, Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer said Maricopa had an “exceptionally higher” number of DUIs than elsewhere in Arizona.

In the “vast, vast, vast majority” of fatal car crashes in Maricopa, he said in July, “substance use and abuse is involved.”

In 2023, the county attorney oversaw 232 felony DUI cases. There were 243 cases in 2022 and 205 cases in 2021.
