Motorists traveling near Maricopa should allow extra travel time Thursday as the Arizona Department of Transportation works to complete two projects along SR 347 before the start of the Memorial Day weekend.

The cleanup from a fuel spill by an overturned semi-truck last weekend will be extended to Thursday, May 26, from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ADOT will close one southbound lane of SR 347 (Maricopa Road) approximately one-half mile north of Maricopa at milepost 175.

Crews have been working diligently to remove the hazardous material before the holiday weekend. During work earlier today, it was determined that additional equipment is needed and will be mobilized in order to complete the project Thursday.

In addition, ADOT will complete pavement improvement work as previously scheduled on SR 347 (mileposts 180-184) from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. One lane in each direction will be open Thursday. Drivers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

The projects are subject to change due to a variety of reasons, including weather, material availability and mechanical difficulties.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
