On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Maricopa Fire Department will be testing selected, qualified applicants as part of the candidate assessment process.

The process will begin at the Maricopa Wells Middle School at 7 a.m., with doors opening at 6 a.m. The entire assessment will be completed in one day. Those who successfully complete one portion of the assessment will be asked to stay and participate in the next portion. The process will be completed no later than 6 p.m.

The candidate assessment process consists of the following three exams and interviews:

1. Written exam. The written exam is based on the certification requirements of the position. The exam material was drawn from the following sources: Essentials of Firefighting, 4th edition; IAFF First Responder Operations; Brady’s Pre-hospital Emergency Care, Prentice-Hall, 2002 edition.

2. Those who pass the written exam will then be invited to participate in the next assessment, a group interview. In this assessment individuals will be asked to participate in an interview with five other candidates. Each candidate will be assessed for their ability to work in team and communicate. If successful in passing the group interview, participants will be eligible for hire and will be asked to participate in a panel interview.

3. The panel interview, led by a panel of three, including at least one battalion chief, will ask individuals a series of questions relating to the position. This assessment will conclude the candidate assessment process.

To date, the department has more than 100 applicants looking to become firefighters.
