Global Water Resources says extra tests show water is safe

After a number of tests, Global Water Resources reported Tuesday afternoon that the water is safe for Maricopa residents to drink and use after a well was shut down Monday. The Smith Well is one of four providing water to area residents.

“The test results are all good and there are no exceedents,” Global Water Spokesperson Paul Walker said. “The only thing we found was some dust and dirt in the water. The water is completely clean and clear now.”

On Monday, Walker said it appeared that during the rain some sediment worked its way into the system.

“The Smith Well was engineered and built with a sealed containment structure that goes over the well and there is also casing that lines the well,” Walker said. “All of that was designed to prevent any type of sediment inflow into the system. Clearly we have a problem with the containment structure.”

Extra bacteriological tests were taken to make sure the water was safe for consumption. “There are no bacteriological issues whatsoever,” Walker said. “We shut that well completely out of the system. There has been no drop in our water tanks and we have plenty of capacity,” Walker added.

Walker said Global Water received a lot of calls and emails from Maricopa residents asking if the water was safe to use.
