On Saturday approximately 30 entrepreneurs participated in the first Maricopa Home-based Business Expo at Rotary Park.

Without storefronts these businesses were available to offer products and to meet local residents. Jewelry, children’s toys and books, cleaning supplies, insurance, clothing, home decorating items, laundry and ironing services, insurance and investments were all represented.

Dan Miller, whose vacation consultant wife Suzie heads Suz’s Cruises, noted that various cruise lines “are offering exceptional deals right now.”

Appliance Works, represented by Ronelle Jamieson whose husband and son do repairs, was available to sign up residents for their washer, dryer, refrigerator and range repair needs. “We want to offer great service at reasonable prices. It’s important to find repair people you can trust,” she said.

Event organizer Therese Starkey noted that there were several last minute cancellations for the event. “But, if you are a home-based business, and you have a chance to work, you take it,” she said. Starkey hopes to put together a citywide business expo at Pacana Park after the first of the year.

Maricopa Seniors sold their new Infinity Discount Card during the Expo. The card, for individuals age 55 and over, costs $7 and features discounts honored at over 80 different local and area businesses and merchants. It will be good for the remainder of 2009 and through the end of 2010. A list of discounts and their providers will soon be available on the seniors’ Web site, www.maricopaseniors.org.

Proceeds from the sales of the Infinity Card are earmarked for the purchase of furnishings and equipment for a Maricopa senior and resource center.
