Shortly after saying goodbye to outgoing members and swearing in several replacements, Maricopa’s new mayor and City Council on Tuesday elected to keep Brent Murphree seated as vice mayor of the governing body.

Mayor Anthony Smith, who ran unopposed with the exception of a handful of write-in candidates, won his seat in March during the Primary Election, along with Councilwoman Marquisha Griffin, who was the only candidate to attract enough votes to bypass campaigning through until the General Election in May.

Councilmen Marvin Brown and Carl Diedrich won their seats in May, both newcomers who effectively ousted former incumbents Kelly Haddad and Will Dunn.

Joe Estes, Ed Farrell and Brent Murphree were not up for re-election and will continue to serve on the Council.

The Honorable Judge Scott Sulley of the Maricopa/Stanfield Justice Court administered the oaths of office to all newly elected members.
