People gathered Saturday for an afternoon of activities and fellowship to celebrate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, is a federal holiday that commemorates the date many enslaved people in Texas received news of their freedom.

Federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and read aloud the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was signed.

Juneteenth is the longest-running African American holiday.
