Local artist unveils new music video

Local singer and songwriter Freddie Duran has unveiled his new music video “Where the Birds Sing in Spanish.”

“It is a song that looks at the immigration issue from the average Mexican immigrant,” said Duran.

However, he added, the song by no means is meant to be a political statement.

“To me the song is about a mystical place or verdant pasture where a human being feels comfortable in every aspect of his surroundings.  They could easily sing in German, French or English depending on what your native tongue is. For me I have the luxury and freedom to choose between English and Spanish, since I can speak them both due to the rich culture I was exposed to as a child growing up in such close proximity to Mexico. But that has changed, with the declining image that country currently possesses,” Duran said.

The video, directed by John Koop of Arizona Virtual Studios, was originally intended to be part of the soundtrack for a movie, in production, about the immigration issue.

“We’re sure it (the song) will become a substantial portrait that succeeds in capturing an unstable point of time in Arizona’s history,” Duran said.

The video was filmed in three days at various locations across the state, but the primary spot used was Papago Park in Phoenix.

“The earth tones there really matched my skin tone,” Duran said.

Maricopa resident Kim Calderone plays on the video. She and her husband Dom run Accelerate the Arts, a company supplying private lessons and running live sound, as well as the Farmers Market at Stagestop Marketplace every weekend. “I met her at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church one Sunday about a year and a half ago. The notes that were emanating from her violin took my soul to a peaceful place,” Duran said.

Duran encourages everyone who views the video to make sure and share it with friends on Facebook and via email. “I’m very proud to have something so substantial out on the web to represent my work in such a professionally produced manner,” he said.
